JD started his full time coaching career in 2003 after graduating from the University of Miami. After 18 months at the YMCA of South Dade, he accepted the position of Program Director at Dante Fascell Park in the City of South Miami (2004-2010). He was later named the Tennis Director for the Tropical Park Tennis Center (2009-2022) where he was in charge of the day to day operations of the facility.

In 2016, he accepted the position of Head Tennis Coach for Belen Jesuit Preparatory School. The team won the Class 3A Team State Championship in 2017, the first ever tennis championship for the school. He was named the 2017 All-Dade Coach of the Year by the Miami Herald and also the 2017 Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year. Since starting at Belen, he has created an environment for players of all levels to participate in the sport, increasing the roster size from 18 players in 2016 to 85 players in 2025, the largest program in the state.

JD left Tropical Park in 2022 and currently runs his programs at Kendalltown and at private residences while continuing to lead the Middle School and Varsity programs at Belen.

Tennis Coach Andres Barbosa

Andres’ passion for tennis is clear to all who meet and interact with him. Very few people can match his knowledge of the sport and, most importantly, his ability to convey that knowledge to his students.

Over the years, multiple students that Andres has coached have achieved a #1 ranking in the state of Florida while dozens of his former players have earned scholarships and/or acceptance to schools such as Harvard, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Emory, William & Mary, University of Florida, Arizona State, Michigan State, Nebraska, Swarthmore, Oklahoma, Appalachian State, Middlebury College, and Babson as a result of their tennis achievements.

Andres started coaching after playing on the Florida International University tennis team from 1994-1997. He began as a hitting coach in 1995 and mastered his craft by observing and working alongside several top local coaches.

He believes in teaching every player, regardless of age or current ability, the most biomechanically efficient strokes and that every player should be given the best information, not just the most athletic or promising students.
